Ebook About NEW YORK TIMES BEST SELLER • A TODAY SHOW #ReadWithJenna BOOK CLUB PICK!An achingly beautiful work of historical fiction that moves between Germany on the eve of World War II and present-day Wisconsin, unspooling a thread of love, longing, and the powerful bonds of family.Annelise is a dreamer: imagining her future while working at her parents' popular bakery in Feldenheim, Germany, anticipating all the delicious possibilities yet to come. There are rumors that anti-Jewish sentiment is on the rise, but Annelise and her parents can't quite believe that it will affect them; they're hardly religious at all. But as Annelise falls in love, marries, and gives birth to her daughter, the dangers grow closer: a brick thrown through her window; a childhood friend who cuts ties with her; customers refusing to patronize the bakery. Luckily Annelise and her husband are given the chance to leave for America, but they must go without her parents, whose future and safety are uncertain. Two generations later, in a small Midwestern city, Annelise's granddaughter, Clare, is a young woman newly in love. But when she stumbles upon a trove of her grandmother's letters from Germany, she sees the history of her family's sacrifices in a new light, and suddenly she's faced with an impossible choice: the past, or her future. A novel of dazzling emotional richness that is based on letters from Lauren Fox's own family, Send for Me is a major departure for this acclaimed author, an epic and intimate exploration of mothers and daughters, duty and obligation, hope and forgiveness.Book Send for Me: A novel Review :
This mesmerizing tale gripped me from the start—I felt so many emotions. I was so invested in Annelise’s journey as she builds a new life as a young woman in America, surrounded by new personalities and struggles and joys. This is braided with the ordinary reality of Nazi Germany that Annelise’s parents experienced, the slow creep of horrors amidst ordinary pleasures. It was so compelling and haunting, and made me think so much about how agonizing it would be to be faced with leaving a life and beloved business behind, and how do you know when it’s too late?Later, Annelise’s granddaughter Clare discovers the letters. She and her mother piece together the reality of what Annelise went through - all that she lost, but all that she escaped, too.I felt like it was all so huge, and as a reader, it was as if I was right there alongside Clare and her mother, working though the shocking contents of the letters and what it means for mothers and daughters and really, for every one of Clare's relationships. I finished this book in one breathless night, but it’ll stay with me for a very long time. If you are looking for good WWII historical fiction this may not be the book for you. Send For Me is a story of mothers and daughters and the ties that bind families. The prose is beautiful, the emotion is deep, but there is not a lot of plot and even less joy in three generations of women. I also found the time skipping and constant perspective changing to be a distraction more than something that enhanced the story or enlivened the characters. I often think that authors overuse this device to compensate for a lack of story. That said, if a beautifully written exploration of mother/daughter relationships is what you want, you may enjoy this book.
